Injection of Dermal fillers is a cosmetic procedure that involves injecting a substance into the skin to restore volume and smooth wrinkles. The therapeutic goods administration (TGA) is Australia’s governing body for Pharmaceuticals, including cosmetic injectables, and of course About Face Brisbane uses only TGA approved fillers. Dermal filler injection is a safe, low-risk procedure in the hands of an appropriately qualified and experienced professional. There are a few different fillers used for varying problems, such as:

Hyaluronic Acid fillers are the most common type of fillers used in Australia. This gel mimics the natural hyaluronic acid found in our bodies, which is responsible for keeping tissues hydrated and filling the spaces between skin structures, such as hair follicles, sebaceous and sweat glands, as well as the collagen fibres that provide the framework that supports the skin. This type of filler can vary in texture; the softer/thinner ones used for lip filler or wrinkle reduction and thicker fillers are generally preferred for increasing volume and defining features i.e. cheekbones.

Lasts for: 6-12 months

A longer-lasting filler available is made of a calcium hydroxyapatite (CaHA) gel which is also naturally found in the body. CaHA stimulates the body’s collagen production process as well as providing volume. This filler is commonly used for enhancing facial features and structures such as chin and jaw enhancement and non-surgical rhinoplasties (nose job). Wrinkle reduction can also be achieved with CaHA fillers. Although long-lasting, it is still not permanent.

Lasts for: 12-18 months

Finally, a synthetic poly-L-lactic acid filler is designed to gradually restore volume. This type of filler isn’t used for lips. It will stimulate collagen production in the area injected, making it effective for fat and volume loss. This type of filler requires another training course also.

Lasts for:  around 24 months

Hyaluronic acid fillers can be dissolved with an enzyme solution, which is sometimes required when the treatment is performed by an inexperienced injector. CaHA and poly-L-lactic acid fillers can’t be reversed so poor-quality work will be evident until the body breaks down the product, after 12-18 months. *Note: About Face Brisbane does not offer filler dissolving treatments

The type of filler used will depend on many different factors such as the patients’ concern, skin type, the thickness of skin, bone structure, age and expectations. Your injector will discuss the filler they will use and why this one was chosen.

Why doesn’t About Face use permanent fillers?

About Face Brisbane doesn’t offer permanent fillers as they have documented risks and common adverse reactions such as tissue damage. Permanent fillers are also only able to be removed via invasive methods such as surgery.

Important questions to ask your treating practitioner:

1. How long have you been performing injectables for?

2. What are your qualifications?

3. What product are you using for me?

4. Is the product TGA approved?

5. What are the risks involved?

An experienced and professional injector will be honest and informative.

Who can perform cosmetic injectables?

Cosmetic injections are Schedule 4 drugs that must be prescribed and administered according to TGA regulations.  These injectables can only be prescribed by a Medical Doctor and performed by either medical doctors or registered nurses that are practicing with a current AHPRA (Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency) registration.

Are dermal fillers and muscle relaxants the same?

No, these are two separate treatments and provide completely different results. Muscle relaxant injections temporarily paralyse the muscle the toxin is injected into, making it ideal to treat and prevent lines and wrinkles caused by dynamic muscle movement. Dermal fillers will provide volume to the area injected.

About Face Brisbane offers free consultations for cosmetic injectables with no obligations. We will discuss your expectations, provide all the information you request and then you can decide if you go ahead with treatment!
